What Drives Poor Indoor Air?
Our daily activities, and the materials in our homes, push indoor air quality down. Indoor air can run several times more polluted than the air outside. These pollutants can aggravate asthma, trigger respiratory issues, and make daily life miserable. The ones Overture tracks, in order:
- CO2 - an odorless gas from combustion and from people breathing, and it climbs fast in occupied rooms. It is not acutely toxic at household levels, but cognition, focus, and sleep quality measurably decline as CO2 rises, which is why we target around 550 ppm indoors.
- PM2.5 - particulate matter up to 2.5 micrometers across (roughly 30 times smaller than a human hair), small enough to reach deep into the lungs. It comes from gas stoves, fireplaces, wildfire smoke, and combustion sources nearby. PM2.5 carries roughly 80% of the indoor-air health load.
- TVOC - total volatile organic compounds, the human-made gases that off-gas from manufactured products, finishes, cleaners, and scented products.
- Humidity - measured by dew point. When the dew point of the air is high and it meets a cold surface, you get condensation and the conditions for mold and microbial growth. ASHRAE puts the indoor dew-point ceiling at 60 °F.
