In an office or a store, the air drives two things you can measure: how well people think, and how much you spend conditioning the space. As CO2 climbs through the day, cognition and decision-making decline. As ventilation runs flat-out on a fixed schedule, you pay for air changes you do not need. Overture® handles both. Why Offices and Retail Should Monitor and Control Their Air
The air in a commercial space affects your people and your operating cost at the same time:
- Lower CO2 keeps employees sharp. In a study of 302 office workers in six countries, each interquartile increase in CO2 of about 315 ppm slowed response times on the Stroop test by about 1.7% and reduced throughput (Cedeño-Laurent et al., 2021).
- Cleaner air at the point of use means a more comfortable space for staff and customers, fewer complaints, and lower absenteeism.
- In 2025 Overture supported a field study by TRC, paid for by California's CalNEXT program (report ET24SWE0015, final report December 19th, 2025). Its finding: “The results show that smart ventilation systems can maintain acceptable IAQ while reducing ventilation runtime compared to continuously operating systems provided the underlying ventilation infrastructure is properly designed and functioning.”
CO2 is one of the metrics every Overture Room Sensor tracks, alongside PM2.5, TVOC, relative humidity, and temperature. OSHA's 5,000 ppm limit is a worker-safety ceiling, not a comfort or performance target, and it tells you nothing about how people perform. The number that matters for an office is far lower. In the Harvard COGfx study, the best-scoring condition held carbon dioxide near 550 ppm with enhanced ventilation (Allen et al., 2016). Overture's carbon dioxide set point is adjustable from 600 to 2,000 ppm and ships at 1,000 ppm, so you can set it low and let the ventilation follow the room.
